Mont Blanc Is 4,807.47 Meters Above Sea Level
Last month, surveyors measured Mont Blanc in France during an expedition. Its height was 4,807.47 meters above sea level. That was 1.29 meters lower than in 2025. Surveyors from the Haute-Savoie regional department shared the results on Wednesday.
How Mont Blanc's Height Changes
The current height is 1.88 meters higher than in 2023. Mont Blanc reached one of its lowest heights in recent years then. In 2007, the summit was 4,810.90 meters high. Since then, its height fell by 3.43 meters.
Surveyors have measured Mont Blanc regularly since 2001. One group is the National Union of Surveyors-Experts (UNGE). The other is the Order of Surveyors-Experts.
They use satellite technology for measurements. Drones help them make a detailed model of the snow and ice cap. The mountain's rock part is about 4,792 meters high.
Heat, wind, and rain change the thickness of snow and ice. So, the summit's position changes.
Measurements and the State of the Glaciers
Experts warned against linking yearly height changes with fast Alpine ice loss. That loss is caused by pollution from burning fossil fuels. An UNGE representative said surface height changes differ from changes in total ice volume or mass.
A rise in summit height does not always mean more ice mass. It also does not disprove the confirmed retreat of Alpine glaciers. Jean de Garay leads the Mont Blanc expedition. He is president of the Haute-Savoie Departmental Chamber of Surveyors.
De Garay said people can see warming in other parts of the Alps. But he said climate change does not yet have the same effect above 4,000 meters. De Garay said the Tete Rousse Glacier has retreated near the route past the Brigade-Blanche hut.
The glacier has melted in some places. Climbers now cross a stream there instead of the glacier. An article said climate change was one cause of this year's record-hot summer in Western Europe. It harmed Alpine regions and sped up ice melting.
Earlier this month, Swiss glaciologists reported that Switzerland lost one fifth of its ice in five years. From 2025 to 2026, its ice volume fell by 5.5%.
